“The Reapings have been halted long enough, Ziven,” my father sits in the center of the screen at the head of the Royal Council of Elysium. His scowl when I walked into the meeting already in progress was on full display. President Rothen of the Galactic Nations council wore an almost identical expression. Both leaders are not exactly members of the Prince Ziven Fan Club.

“The people are scared, hungry, and wary, Your Majesty.” Normally, I wouldn’t address my father in such a formal way but since I was all but banished I figured it might make a statement. “We’re also overloaded and have limited resources. Our receiving units are packed full and well over maximum capacity when the ships are sent out for delivery.”

“Is this why four shipments have been lost already?” President Rothen asks me and I note the change in my father’s posture—more rigid than relaxed. Did he think the GN wouldn’t notice their precious shipments of Humans go missing?

“Four? I thought it was only two.” Well, that’s interesting. I glance over my shoulder at the general. He's wearing his hood so I can’t gauge his expression but his hands move from the table to his lap and his head moves as if he’s lifting his chin. I swear that man can be smug even without his disturbing facial expressions.

I open my mouth to respond when I’m cut off. “Does this have to do with your absence from the last council briefing?” Unhooded, I have to control my features.

“I was unaware of the last meeting, as I was of this one,” I answer. And it’s true. I have no clue when the last meeting was and was told late that this one was happening. Where the fuck are my advisors? “And no, my absence was—”

“The Human witch has been staying with you.” It’s not a question but a statement from my father. Of course, I was wondering when Andi would be brought up.

“She has,” I say in response. Keep it vague, Ziven. No interest. I tell myself remembering that of all people my father will be able to spot my lies.

“He’s being modest, uncle.” Of course he’d jump in now. Tabbris stands and joins me in front of the monitors. “They’ve been getting acquainted and have grown quite close.” A grin spreads across every face of both councils’ representatives. I see it then, the glimmer of possibility that I have found the weapon they desire. How they plan on using her powers is beyond me. All she can do is teleport and communicate telepathically with me and those don't seem strategically beneficial.

“Has the bonding happened yet, Ziven? And why haven’t you informed us of the pairing?” My father almost beams with pride and it’s the first time since I was taken hostage, medically altered, and deemed unworthy that my father hasn’t looked upon me with total disgust.

“I’m not sure a pair has been matched, sir,” I say quickly. “And to be honest, she is a witch but I’m not certain she’s mine.
